FMP Group (Thailand) Co., Ltd. (Bendix) initiated an enterprise backup infrastructure modernization project in 2025 to strengthen data protection, reduce software costs, and improve recovery readiness in the event of unexpected incidents.

Initial Project Phase

During the initial phase, the backup infrastructure was designed and implemented using Synology Active Backup for Business (ABB) as the primary platform for protecting physical servers and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines. The solution was introduced to replace the existing Veeam Backup platform, which required an annual software subscription.

Active Backup for Business is included with supported Synology NAS models without additional software licensing fees. This enables the organization to reduce recurring backup software costs while consolidating backup management, monitoring, and recovery operations onto a centralized platform.

Immutable Snapshots were also implemented to create recovery points that cannot be modified or deleted during a defined retention period. This additional protection layer helps reduce the risk of ransomware attacks, unauthorized data modification, and accidental actions that could compromise backup data.

Phase 2 Expansion

During the second phase, the backup environment was expanded and consolidated to protect systems across two offices in Bangkok and one office in Rayong. Active Backup for Business was used to protect physical servers, virtual machines, and PC endpoints through a centralized management platform.

The solution was built using two Synology RackStation RS2423RP+ systems. The first system operates as the primary backup platform running Active Backup for Business, while the second system stores an additional copy of the backup data and provides Immutable Snapshot protection.

An additional backup copy is stored in Wasabi Cloud Storage to provide off-site data protection and support the 3-2-1 Backup Strategy. This approach requires at least three copies of data, stored on at least two different storage types, with at least one copy maintained at an off-site location.

Multi-Layer Data Protection

The integration of Active Backup for Business, Immutable Snapshots, and Wasabi Cloud Storage provides multiple layers of data protection. These layers include workload backup, an additional protected backup copy, and an off-site cloud backup.

This architecture helps reduce risks associated with hardware failure, site-level incidents, user errors, and ransomware attacks. It also ensures that reliable backup copies remain available for recovery when unexpected incidents occur.
