Using free Wi-Fi at hotels, coffee shops, or public areas is convenient, but there are hidden risks, especially when you need to log in to important accounts like Microsoft 365. Malicious actors might create fake login pages to steal your information.
Try following these simple steps for safety:
1. Observe the website address (URL): Before entering your password every time, look at the web address bar in the browser. It must be the official Microsoft website only, and there must be a padlock icon 🔒 indicating that the connection is secure.
2. Use Mobile Hotspot from your phone: If you are not sure about the security of public Wi-Fi, connecting to the internet from your own phone will be much safer for important work.
3. Enable VPN: If it is necessary to use public Wi-Fi, using a reliable VPN (Virtual Private Network) service will help encrypt your data and protect your connection from malicious actors.
4. Enable two-step verification (2FA): Set up your Microsoft 365 account to require authentication through an app or SMS, which will help protect even if your password is compromised.
⚠️ If the login page looks different from usual, has unusual urgent messages, or the browser warns that the connection is not secure, stop entering information immediately and disconnect from that Wi-Fi.
