Whether you plan to sell your old computer, donate it, or transfer it to another employee, completely erasing personal and company data is crucial. This article from SyncTech Solution will guide you on how to use built-in Windows tools to securely and properly wipe data, ensuring that sensitive information does not fall into the wrong hands.

### Understand Before You Act: Why Just "Deleting Files" or "Formatting" Isn't Enough
Many believe that dragging files to the Recycle Bin and emptying it, or even formatting a drive, permanently deletes data. In reality, these methods only remove the "table of contents" that points to the file's location on the hard disk. The actual data remains and can be easily recovered using data recovery software.

Secure Erase or Data Sanitization is a process that doesn't just delete the table of contents; it "overwrites" the original data area repeatedly with new data until the old data is irrecoverable. Windows 10 and Windows 11 have this function built into the "Reset this PC" option, allowing you to confidently wipe your device without needing additional software.

### Before You Start: Prepare Your Device
Before beginning the irreversible data wiping process, there are steps you must take to prevent the loss of important data and ensure a smooth operation.

1. **Back up all your data:** Move all work files, documents, photos, and any other important data you wish to keep to another location, such as an External Hard Drive, USB Drive, or cloud storage services like OneDrive or Google Drive.
2. **Sign out of all accounts:** Open programs where you are currently logged in, such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, LINE PC, or Steam, and sign out or deauthorize to disconnect your accounts from this computer.
3. **Allocate time and plug in:** The data overwriting process takes significantly longer than a regular reset, potentially several hours, depending on the drive's capacity and speed. Keep your laptop plugged in throughout the process to prevent the battery from running out prematurely.

### How to Securely Wipe Data: Using Reset this PC
Follow these steps to completely wipe the data on your Windows computer.

**Step 1: Open Recovery Settings**
* **WHAT:** Access the settings menu to begin the reset process.
* **WHERE/HOW:**
* For **Windows 11:** Right-click the Start button > Settings > System > Recovery
* For **Windows 10:** Click the Start button > Settings (gear icon) > Update & Security > Recovery
* **WHY:** This is the pathway to the "Reset this PC" tool built into Windows.
* **EXPECTED RESULT:** You will see the Recovery screen with a "Reset PC" or "Get started" button.

**Step 2: Start the Reset this PC process**
* **WHAT:** Click the button to initiate the reset.
* **WHERE/HOW:** On the Recovery screen, click the "Reset PC" button (for Windows 11) or "Get started" button (for Windows 10) under the "Reset this PC" heading.
* **WHY:** To open the reset options window.
* **EXPECTED RESULT:** A blue window will appear, offering options to keep your files or remove everything.

**Step 3: Select "Remove everything"**
* **WHAT:** Choose the option to delete all personal files, applications, and settings.
* **WHERE/HOW:** In the "Choose an option" window, click "Remove everything".
* **WHY:** This is a critical step to ensure no personal data remains on the device. Selecting "Keep my files" will not erase your personal data.
* **EXPECTED RESULT:** The system will take you to the next screen to choose how to reinstall Windows.

**Step 4: Choose the Windows installation method**
* **WHAT:** Select whether Windows should download new installation files from the internet or use existing files on the device.
* **WHERE/HOW:** On the "How would you like to reinstall Windows" page, choose "Cloud download" or "Local reinstall". We recommend selecting **Cloud download** if you have a high-speed internet connection.
* **WHY:** Cloud download provides the latest version of Windows and the most complete files. Local reinstall is faster but uses potentially problematic existing files.
* **EXPECTED RESULT:** You will proceed to the "Additional settings" page, which is the most crucial part.

**Step 5: Enable "Clean data" (Most Important)**
* **WHAT:** Activate the data overwriting option for maximum security.
* **WHERE/HOW:** On the "Additional settings" page, click "Change settings". You will see the option "Clean data?" or "Do you want to clean the drive?". Change it from **No to Yes**.
* **WHY:** Enabling this option instructs Windows to overwrite your old files with other data, making data recovery extremely difficult, if not impossible. Although it takes significantly longer, it is the most secure method for transferring a device.
* **EXPECTED RESULT:** The "Additional settings" summary page will show "Removes files and cleans the drive". Then click Confirm.

**Step 6: Confirm and start the reset**
* **WHAT:** Review the summary of all settings and confirm to begin the process.
* **WHERE/HOW:** Read the summary on the "Ready to reset this PC" page, which will indicate "Remove apps, files..." and "Clean the drive". Then click the "Reset" button.
* **WHY:** This is the final confirmation before the entire data deletion process begins, which cannot be canceled.
* **EXPECTED RESULT:** The computer will begin the reset process and restart itself multiple times. The screen will show progress as a percentage. **This step will take several hours.** Allow the device to complete the process.

### Verify the Result
Once the entire process is complete, you will know if it was successful by observing the following:
1. **Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) setup screen:** The computer will boot to the Windows setup screen, similar to when it was first turned on, prompting you to select country/region, keyboard layout, and create a new user account.
2. **No old files:** After temporary setup, checking File Explorer should reveal no old user accounts or document files remaining on the C: drive.

### If Issues Persist
The "Reset this PC" process is generally highly reliable. However, if errors occur during the process, such as a failed reset or inability to boot into Windows, the secure options are:
* **For general users:** Contact a qualified computer repair shop to assist with a clean format and fresh Windows installation.
* **For corporate employees:** Contact your company's IT department immediately, as the device may have encryption or specialized settings that require administrator handling.

Taking the time to correctly follow these steps is an investment in the security of your personal and business data. It is a simple yet crucial step that everyone should take before transferring a computer.
