Fix OneNote sync issues showing code 0xE000005E easily by yourself

Have you ever written an important note in OneNote but when you try to open it on your phone or another device, you can't find it, along with a red warning message and error code 0xE000005E? This problem causes concern for many users, but don't worry. This article from SyncTech Solution will help you understand the cause and provide step-by-step safe solutions to get your notes syncing correctly across all devices again.

Understand before fixing
Error code 0xE000005E in OneNote generally means a "Sync Error" or a problem with transferring data between the OneNote program on your computer and the cloud storage (such as OneDrive or SharePoint). The causes can stem from various factors, whether it is an unstable internet connection, making too many large edits at once, some Section files being slightly corrupted, or even authentication issues with the server.

The advantage is that this problem is mostly a temporary 'communication disruption' and does not mean that your data has gone missing. Usually, the latest data is still stored on your computer (called Cache), waiting for a full synchronization again. Therefore, the solution focuses on stimulating this communication to return to normal.

Before Starting
For maximum safety and to prevent unsynced data from being lost, you should do the following before making any changes:
1. Check the Internet: Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet normally. Try visiting other websites to confirm.
2. Backup unsynced data: This is the most important step. Take note of which pages or sections in OneNote have warning marks indicating a failed sync. Copy all the content from those pages and paste it temporarily into another program, such as Notepad, Microsoft Word, or even a draft email, to ensure that you have a copy of your latest work saved.
3. Write down the notebook name: See which notebook the problem occurs with. Normally, OneNote clearly shows the name of the notebook that has the problem.

How to do it safely

Step 1: Force OneNote to sync again (Manual Sync)
- WHAT: Instruct OneNote to try to sync the problematic notebook manually
- WHERE/HOW: In the OneNote program, right-click on the notebook name that has a problem in the left column, then select the "Sync This Notebook" menu, or if you want to sync all, go to the File > Info > View Sync Status menu and press the Sync All button.
- WHY: Manually syncing prompts the program to start the process of reconnecting and sending all data again, which may help resolve issues caused by temporary connection interruptions.
- EXPECTED RESULT: The sync status icon will start spinning, and if successful, the error notification icon will disappear. Your data will be updated to the cloud.

Step 2: Check information via OneNote for the web
- WHAT: Open the same notebook through a web browser to check which version of the data is on the cloud
- WHERE/HOW: Go to the website www.onenote.com or access your organization's Microsoft 365, then sign in with the same account you use in the OneNote program. Search for and open the notebook that has issues.
- WHY: This method helps us distinguish whether the problem is caused by the program on the computer or by the files on the cloud. If you see most of the data complete on the web, it means the data on the cloud is still safe. The problem is likely with the program on your computer.
- EXPECTED RESULT: You can view and edit notes through the browser as usual, confirming that your important data has not been lost.

Step 3: Close and Reopen the Notebook (Close and Reopen Notebook)
- WHAT: Perform a "reset" of that notebook's connection by closing and then reopening it
- WHERE/HOW: (Important: Make sure you have backed up according to the "Before Starting" steps) In OneNote, right-click on the notebook with the problem, then select "Close This Notebook." The notebook will disappear from your list. Then go to the File menu > Open and choose to open the same notebook from its location on OneDrive or SharePoint.
- WHY: This action will clear the cache or temporary files of that notebook on your device and force OneNote to download all the data again from the cloud, which often resolves issues with corrupted files or stuck sync status.
- EXPECTED RESULT: The notebook will be completely re-downloaded. It may take some time depending on the size of the data. Once finished, syncing should return to normal.

Step 4: Create a new section and move the data
- WHAT: If the problem persists and occurs in a specific Section, try moving the data to a newly created Section
- WHERE/HOW: In the same notebook, create a new Section by clicking the plus (+) sign on the Section bar. Give it a temporary name. Then go back to the old Section that has the problem, right-click on each page, select Move or Copy..., and choose to move it to the new Section you just created. Do this for every page.
- WHY: Sometimes the file used to store the data of that Section may become corrupted. Moving the content to a new, complete Section will help the data sync correctly.
- EXPECTED RESULT: The new section with complete data will sync successfully without errors. After confirming that all data has arrived, you can delete the old section that has issues.

Check Results
1. Check the status icon: The icon next to the notebook name should be a green check mark, or a spinning arrow icon that completes its operation, and no error notification bars appear.
2. Test two-way sync: Try typing a small piece of text in OneNote on the computer, then open OneNote for the web to see if the text appears (it may take 1-2 minutes). Then try editing it on the web, and go back to the program to see if the data is updated consistently.

If not yet recovered
If you have followed all the steps and the problem still persists, it may be caused by other factors:
- Repair Office Program: The issue may be with the installed Microsoft Office program. Try using the repair function by going to Control Panel > Programs and Features, right-clicking on Microsoft 365/Office, and selecting Change > Quick Repair
- Contact IT Department: If you are using a company computer, the problem may be caused by network security policies or issues with the organization's SharePoint server. In this case, you should contact IT Support to have them check at a higher level.

Fixing OneNote sync issues may seem worrying, but most of the time it can be resolved with these basic steps. Just stay calm and follow the sequence. Most importantly, always back up any unsynced data first so you can continue working with peace of mind.
