Is Your Windows 11 Still Secure? How to Check Version and Update Before Support Ends

Many Windows 11 users may not be aware that the version they are using has a security support expiration date. Leaving it unupdated could expose you to cyber threats. This article from the SyncTech Solution team will show you how to check your current Windows 11 version and guide you through secure update steps to keep your computer up-to-date and protected.

### Understand Before You Fix

When Microsoft "stops supporting" a particular Windows version, it doesn't mean that Windows will cease to boot or function. Instead, it signifies that Microsoft will no longer issue security updates for that version. This is like a house without anyone to fix vulnerabilities or replace a broken doorknob. Over time, intruders or malicious actors who discover new loopholes can more easily penetrate your system.

Windows 11 receives major version updates regularly (e.g., 22H2, 23H2), and each version has its own support period. When an older version expires, the risks increase, including those from malware, ransomware, or personal data theft. Therefore, consistently using the latest version is the most crucial basic prevention method.

### Before You Begin

Updating your Windows version is a relatively significant and time-consuming process. You should prepare in advance to minimize potential risks.

1. **Back up Important Data:** While updates are generally safe, errors can always occur. You should back up work files, photos, or other important data to an External Hard Drive or Cloud Storage services (e.g., OneDrive, Google Drive) beforehand.
2. **Prepare Internet Connection:** Update files are large. You should use a stable, high-speed internet connection, such as home or office Wi-Fi. Avoid using a mobile hotspot if not necessary.
3. **Plug In Power (for notebooks):** The update process can be lengthy and power-intensive. If the battery runs out midway, it could corrupt system files and prevent your device from booting. Keep the charger plugged in throughout the update.

### How to Safely Update

Follow these steps to check and update your Windows 11 to the latest version.

**1. Check Your Current Windows 11 Version**
* **WHAT:** See what Windows 11 version and build your computer is currently running.
* **WHERE/HOW:** Press the `Windows + R` keys on your keyboard to open the Run window, then type `winver` and press Enter.
* **WHY:** To know the current status of your system and to compare after the update to verify success.
* **EXPECTED RESULT:** An "About Windows" window will appear, clearly displaying the Version and OS Build information, such as "Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.xxxx)". Make a note of this version number.

**2. Check for Latest Updates from Microsoft**
* **WHAT:** Instruct Windows to check Microsoft's servers for new updates available for installation.
* **WHERE/HOW:** Go to Start > Settings (gear icon) > Windows Update, then click the "Check for updates" button.
* **WHY:** This is the most official and secure way to receive updates directly from the manufacturer, ensuring that the files received are not fake or embedded with viruses.
* **EXPECTED RESULT:** The system will take a moment to search. If new updates are found, they will be listed. This may include both monthly security updates and major version updates (Feature Update), the latter being what we are looking for.

**3. Download and Install the New Version Update**
* **WHAT:** Begin the process of downloading and preparing to install the new version update files.
* **WHERE/HOW:** If a new version update is available, you will see a message similar to "Feature update to Windows 11, version [new version number]" along with a "Download & install" button. Click this button.
* **WHY:** To install the new set of system files over the old ones, providing your computer with the latest features and security.
* **EXPECTED RESULT:** Windows will begin downloading the update files, which may take a long time depending on your internet speed and file size. You can continue to use your computer normally during this process.

**4. Restart Your Device to Finish Installation**
* **WHAT:** Initiate the complete installation process for the downloaded updates.
* **WHERE/HOW:** Once the download and preparation are complete, Windows will notify you to restart your device. You can click "Restart now" or schedule it for a convenient time.
* **WHY:** The installation of core system files cannot occur while Windows is running. Restarting is a mandatory step for the system to install updates completely. Do NOT shut down your device by any other means during this time.
* **EXPECTED RESULT:** Your computer will restart and may display a blue screen with the message "Working on updates...". It might restart itself 1-2 more times during this step. You should wait until it returns to the normal desktop.

**5. Re-verify the New Version**
* **WHAT:** Check to ensure the update was successful.
* **WHERE/HOW:** Use the same method as step 1: press `Windows + R`, type `winver`, and press Enter.
* **WHY:** To confirm that your device is now running on the truly new version.
* **EXPECTED RESULT:** The "About Windows" window should display the latest version number that you just installed.

### Verify the Results

After completing all steps, you can verify the successful update at 2-3 points:
1. **Check Version:** Use the `winver` command again to confirm that the version number (e.g., 23H2) is the latest.
2. **Check Windows Update Status:** Go back to Settings > Windows Update. You should see a green checkmark with the message "You're up to date".
3. **Test Usage:** Open 2-3 programs you use regularly to see if they are still functioning normally.

### If It's Still Not Resolved

If the update is unsuccessful or you cannot find the update, try the following:
* **Use Windows Update Troubleshooter:** Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Run under Windows Update to let the system analyze and fix basic issues.
* **Wait a while:** Sometimes Microsoft rolls out updates gradually to different groups of devices, or there might be compatibility issues with certain hardware, preventing you from seeing the update immediately.
* **Contact IT Department (for corporate devices):** If it's a company computer, update policies are usually controlled by the IT department. You should not update it yourself but rather inform IT to proceed according to organizational policy.

Keeping your operating system updated is the most important first line of defense for safe computer usage. Do not neglect update notifications, as they are what help protect your data and devices from new threats.
