Urgent! Synology Warns of Ransomware Attacks on NAS via Old Vulnerabilities – Update DSM Now!
Technology news
Synology has issued an urgent security alert advising NAS users to immediately update their DSM software after detecting ransomware attacks exploiting old, previously patched vulnerabilities to encrypt data and demand ransom.
📌 Key Highlights:
- Synology issued an urgent security warning after discovering hackers are attacking NAS devices via old vulnerabilities in DSM software.
- These attacks target devices still running outdated, unpatched DSM versions, aiming to encrypt data and demand ransom.
- Synology urgently recommends all users update DSM to the latest version immediately to patch vulnerabilities and prevent damage.
Synology, a leading manufacturer of network-attached storage (NAS) devices, has issued an urgent alert to users worldwide, advising them to immediately update their DiskStation Manager (DSM) software. This comes after detecting malicious attacks directly targeting Synology NAS devices.
The company's investigation revealed that hacker groups are exploiting existing security vulnerabilities in older DSM versions. Synology had already released patches for these vulnerabilities in December 2024. However, a significant number of users have not updated their software, making them easy targets for attack.
🚨 Attack Pattern
The observed attacks are ransomware in nature. Once hackers successfully exploit vulnerabilities to infiltrate a victim's NAS device, they proceed to encrypt all stored data files, including critical documents, photos, videos, or business information. This renders users unable to access their files, after which the attackers leave a ransom note demanding payment for data decryption.
🛡️ How to Protect
Synology emphasizes that the best and simplest protection method currently is to always keep DSM updated to the latest version. Users can check for and perform updates directly through their DSM control panel. Updating will not only close the vulnerabilities being exploited in the current attacks but also include other security enhancements and new features for your device. Do not let your critical data remain at risk simply by failing to update your software.
